Tempered glass behaves differently

Your windshield is laminated: two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer, which is why it cracks and stays in one piece. Every other window on the vehicle is tempered, engineered to break into small dull-edged granules rather than shards.

That is safer in a collision and messier afterward. A shattered back glass puts glass in the cargo area, in the seat tracks, in the seat belt reels, and inside the door cavity. Cleanup is genuinely half the job, and it is the half most people underestimate.

What we replace

  • Back glass / rear windshield — including heated defroster grid and antenna connections, reconnected and tested.
  • Door glass — front and rear, with the regulator checked so the new glass runs true and the run channel is cleared of debris.
  • Quarter and vent glass — the small fixed panes ahead of and behind the doors.
  • Sliding rear glass on pickups — including the slider assembly when the track is damaged.
  • Vandalism and break-in damage — we prioritize these calls. A vehicle with an open window is not secure.

Same-day when we can

A broken window is not something to leave overnight. We keep common back glass and door glass moving quickly, and if the part has to be ordered we will get temporary weather sheeting on the opening so the interior stays dry.

Most rear and door glass jobs run 60 to 90 minutes including cleanup, and there is no urethane cure wait on tempered glass set into a channel — you can usually drive immediately.

Why did my back glass shatter with no impact?+
Tempered glass can fail from a tiny nick in the edge that has been carrying stress for months, then let go on a hot day or when a door is slammed. It looks spontaneous and it is not unusual.
Will my rear defroster still work?+
Yes. Replacement back glass comes with the defroster grid printed on it, and we reconnect and test the tabs before we leave. If the tabs on the vehicle side are corroded we will tell you.
Do you clean up all the broken glass?+
That is a big part of the job. We vacuum the cargo area, seat rails, and the inside of the door cavity. Expect to find a stray granule or two weeks later anyway — that is the nature of tempered glass, and any shop that promises otherwise is guessing.
Can I drive with plastic taped over the opening?+
For a short trip in dry weather, and only as a stopgap. It is not secure, it is loud, and at highway speed the sheeting will not hold. Call and we will get the real glass in.
