What can be repaired

Repair works on damage that has not broken through the inner layer of the laminate and has not reached the edge of the glass. As a rule of thumb: bullseyes, star breaks, and combination breaks up to about the size of a quarter, and single cracks up to roughly six inches.

• Good candidates: bullseye and half-moon chips, small star breaks, short cracks away from the edge, pits from highway gravel.
• Usually not repairable: anything in the driver's direct sightline where the repair scar would distract, cracks touching the frit or edge, long spreading cracks, and damage with contamination or missing glass.
• Borderline: send us a photo. We will tell you honestly whether resin will hold or whether you are better off with a replacement.

Why waiting costs you a windshield

Eastern Washington is hard on glass. Summer surface temperatures on a parked car and winter mornings below freezing put the laminate through a wide expansion cycle, and a chip is a stress concentrator sitting right in the middle of it. Blast the defroster onto a cold, chipped windshield and a quarter-sized break can become a twenty-inch crack in seconds.

Gravel is the other half of the problem. I-82, US 395, and the farm and orchard haul routes across Benton, Franklin, and Yakima counties throw rock year round. Most of the repairs we do come from those roads.

The repair, start to finish

Under 30 minutes for a single chip. We clean and dry the break, pull air out of it under vacuum, inject resin under pressure so it fills the legs of the break, cure it with UV light, then scrape and polish the surface flush.

Expect the damage to become 80 to 95 percent less visible. A faint mark usually remains where the impact point was — that is normal and it is not a failed repair. What matters is that the break is sealed, the strength is restored, and it will not spread.

Insurance often pays the whole thing
